The Road Less Taken
C.S. Lewis painted for us this picture of the road less taken in the story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We see the lamppost but not much beyond or ahead.
We travel. Not knowing exactly where this road leads. New surroundings. An adventure. But not just an adventure for adventure’s sake.
Rather it is the road of a lifetime, an eternity, a lifestyle.
A road that God lays out for us.
A road in which we see just enough and then must travel down that road with a good dose of faith in our backpacks.
A place where His miracles occur.
A place where we give up our own ‘vanities’ for more dangerous emotions as John Eldredge states in his book “The Sacred Romance”.
Emotions such as hope, grief, joy, love and peace.
This road less taken costs you everything.
In the book “The Sacrament of the Present Moment” Jean De Causade says this about that road:
“You are going east, He will turn you to the west. You are set fair on a course, He turns the rudder and steers you back to harbour. Without either compass or map, wind or tide, your voyage is always successful; and if pirates cross your path an unexpected gust of wind blows them off their course!"
What a great picture those words paint of God our Rescuing King who desires to keep our lives on course with His purposes and His plans.
Indeed, God is in the business of keeping you on this road less taken which is His road.
De Causade goes on to say that when we are at a place where we are “unable to discover or imagine a way out (of our difficulties). It is then that God’s purpose is manifest in all its radiance, rescuing souls more miraculously than any writer of fantastic tales, who, straining every effort of his imagination in the seclusion of his study, unravels the intrigues and perils of his imaginary heroes and always brings their adventures to a happy conclusion.”
God’s purpose is manifest on this road less taken. He comes as Rescuer, plucking us from ill fate and placing us on a road to eternity.
This then is the invitation. “Come then, past the perils and monsters, guided and upheld by that sure unseen hand which is the invincible, infallible hand of God.”
Come then past the perils of life, take the adventure that God has laid out before you. Leave the lamppost behind and travel down that road less taken.
Psalm 84:5 says: And how blessed all those in whom you live, whose lives become roads You travel…
Yes, Lord, You indeed set us on passage, down the road less traveled. Yet our very lives are the roads that You travel. You are with us through “the lonesome valleys, come upon brooks, discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain!” (Ps. 84)
God – traveled, these roads curve up the mountain, and at the last turn – Zion! God in full view!
